The
Illuminated Rumi Prints

In
1997 Michael collaborated with poet and translator Coleman Barks
to create The Illuminated Rumi, merging art and text in the
tradition of the great illuminated manuscripts. Called “one
of the most celebrated pieces of poetry and artwork” by
Sacred Pathways magazine, The Illuminated Rumi has become a
new classic and a national best-seller. These prints are largely
drawn from the art of that book
13th century Persian Sufi mystic Jelaluddin
Rumi is the most–read poet in America today. Rumi’s
popularity is one of the most visible signals of a vast shift
taking place in the American psyche today. Old Newtonian verities
are dissolving in a quantum shimmer as a new kind of sacred
consciousness emerges in keeping with the ecological and social
crises we face. And Rumi has become one of its most articulate
voices.

The Art,
Science & Religion Prints

Today,
for the first time, humankind’s entire 35,000 year long
heritage of art and thought is available to anyone. These scientific-mythic-organic
shape-shifting images draw freely and elegantly from this vast
reservoir.
"Along with many other artists, my work
is discovering a vocabulary of archetypal images appropriate
to our time. In the process we may be defining an important
new understanding of sacred art."
Art illuminating the deepest insights of science!
Science dancing at the edge of spirit! A new art offering glimpses
of a glorious interwoven universe, flowing across the empty
space of consciousness which is the viewer’s deepest identity.

The
Afterculture Prints

All
of this art is part of a shift in our world outlook from scientific-technological
to sustainable-sacred. If such a shift is true, it must eventually
manifest itself in the real world. Does this mean simply developing
environmentally friendly habits and technologies?
What kind of culture might emerge if we REALLY embraced a deeper
relation to the natural world, or a deeper relation to our own
lives? And then lived in complete accord with the understandings?
What
would we be like?
What
if we wanted to intimately experienced ourselves as part of
the web of life again? And moved in harmony with the rest of
God’s creatures? What if we granted the buffalo room to
roam again?
What
would we be like?
If
we saw the gift of being human is to explore the sacred dimension,
would we simplify our outer lives the better to explore our
inner ones?
What
would we be like?
To
change course, it helps to have a new destination in mind. Based
on anthropological models that “work,” the Afterculture
is a destination that works–sustainable, simple, sacred.
Perhaps these images are tankas of the future, a future being
mythologically shaped, and even lived, right now. |

The
Unicornis Prints

Reawakening
the Sacred World...
These limited edition prints are part of a unique body of art
that first appeared in the book Unicornis. Presented as the
journal of Magnalucious, a wandering artist-pilgrim, it attempted
to flesh out the unicorn myth and link it to the present. With
word and picture Magnalucious details his encounter with the
fabled creature. The background is 16th Century Italy, where
The Age of Faith is being swept aside by the intellectual enthusiasm
and scientific achievement of the modern world.
Today,
that shift has run its course. Looking back at a century of
world-wars, ozone depletion, tropical deforestation, species
extinction-and our own alienation-it is all too clear that vast
and destructive forces were unleashed then, forces we have been
powerless to control. The human ambition to dominate the earth
has reached a tipping point, and if the web of life as we know
it is to survive, we must expand our horizons to embrace the
wider, gentler world-outlook symbolized for many by the unicorn.
We must learn again to experience the earth as living sacred
presence.
Perhaps
this is by grand design. Christian traditions suggest the unicorn
was a receptacle for secret gnostic teachings, and the legendary
creature endures as an embodiment of harmony between nature,
man and spirit. Myth-bringer and heart-lightener, the unicorn
points to mysterious riches, to all that we are and all that
we could be. |

Like
the ground turning green in a spring wind.
Like birdsong beginning inside the egg.
Like this universe coming into existence,
the lover wakes and whirls
in a dancing joy
then kneels down in praise.
